How I Got Scammed on YouTube: A Cautionary Tale for Creators

Hey, everyone! Today, I’m taking a break from my usual content to share a story that I never thought I’d be telling: how I got scammed on YouTube. As someone who prides themselves on being cautious, this was a humbling experience, but I hope it serves as a lesson for all of us.

The Setup

It all started when I decided to host a series of subscriber giveaways on my channel, when I launched in January 2024. I love giving back to my community, so I did a giveaway at 50 subscribers, then another at 225, and the most recent one at 600 subscribers. These giveaways were simple: like the video, subscribe, and comment if you wanted to participate. I’d then use a random wheel to pick a winner.

The Scam

The scam happened during my 600-subscriber giveaway. I posted the winner announcement video at my usual time, 11:30 a.m., and within two minutes, I received an email. The email was from someone claiming to be the winner, thanking me and asking if I could send the monetary value instead of the prize because they didn’t collect Basketball Cards. Given that I pride myself on quick responses and engagement, I didn’t hesitate. I sent the $25 via PayPal immediately.

Minutes later, I received another email from the actual winner, who had commented on the video with the exact username. It was at that moment I realized I’d been duped. The scammer had created a fake Gmail account with the winner’s username, fooling me into thinking it was the legitimate winner.

The Aftermath

Feeling a mix of embarrassment and frustration, I promptly sent the real winner their prize. Reflecting on this, I recognized a few key mistakes:

  • Not verifying the winner properly: I should have asked the email sender to comment on the video with a specific word or phrase to confirm their identity.
  • Acting too quickly: My eagerness to respond promptly backfired. If I had waited a bit longer, I might have caught the discrepancy.

Lessons Learned

This experience taught me several valuable lessons:

  1. Verification is crucial: Always double-check the identity of giveaway winners.
  2. Patience pays off: Taking a little extra time to verify information can save you from costly mistakes.
  3. Reconsider giveaways: Giveaways can attract temporary subscribers who unsubscribe if they don’t win, skewing your channel’s growth metrics.

While this was a tough lesson to learn, it’s a reminder that scams can happen to anyone, even those who think they’re too vigilant to fall for them. I hope sharing this story helps other creators avoid similar pitfalls.

Stay safe out there, everyone, and keep creating great content!
